Whenever I used to see the old Ship's sign towering over the corner of Olympic and La Cienega, I wished modern health codes encouraged more restaurants to have toasters on each table. Southern California was once dotted with old-school diners. At Culver City’s Honey’s Kettle, chicken is fried in enormous kettle drums until a thick, crispy coating is formed. The building was constructed around 1917 and originally sold Ford Model Ts. Out in front of our building you’ll find a Hart Parr Tractor. The 6,100-lbs 1920s era tractor is an model, which means 18 horsepower at the drawbar and 36 horsepower at the flywheel. The engine is a two cylinder mounted horizontally, and is capable of running on gasoline, kerosene or distillate. The tractor doesn’t have the lugs mounted to the wheels for traction because it was used for custom threshing and traveled over public roads, and those lugs would have torn the road into pieces.

This sign stood above the Corral Cafe in Dumas, Texas, during the ‘40s and ‘50s. Dumas is located in Moore Country, towards the top of the Texas panhandle. The southwest corner of the building is a monument we built to honor the building’s previous service.
